However, we are far from understanding all of the elements that impact how people make decisions. You mention in passing how it could be used to reduce the impact on the environment by letting people know their energy consumption. Noah J. Goldstein in his book Yes! talks about the experiment in California where households were mailed the energy use of a particular neighborhood. Surprisingly, those who were conserving energy reverted to use more when they realized that they were the only ones using less. Do we make decisions all the time to conform to community standards knowingly that doing so creates harms to ourselves, others, the environment?
