Thank you for this. That said, the example of the chef who has a lifelong obsession with the sea fell flat. If someone with the ability to empathize was genuinely obsessed with the ocean, why would they feel compelled to violently extract its inhabitants and consume their bodies? From my experience, people with an intimate understanding of something are far more likely to protect it than destroy it. Beyond that one example, though, this was an interesting and informative read.
